HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
5th August 2016
Polytunnel preparation is almost done. The wildflower
patch has given us renewed hope and the protection on
the north Devon bank is now in place, with only minor
cuts and abrasions suffered.
We really hope this does
the job. Since I put it up
there has been no
evidence of any deer in
the garden, but I just
don’t know how
determined they are to
get in! There are still
many unprotected parts of
the bank but they all look
as if nothing has been
disturbed this year.
The recent heavy rain
has had the unexpected
benefit of crushing the
grass still growing in the
wildflower patch so that
the Birdsfoot Trefoil and
Lesser Knapweed are
now prominent, and the
patch is visited by what
seems a large number of
bees and butterflies.
The butterflies seem to
be either Cabbage
Whites (hmm…) or these
lovely Red Admirals
It is now so close to being
fully ready for planting.
Lesley has been working
hard on preparing the soil
in rather difficult hot and
humid conditions in there.
Cucumber and courgettes
are flourishing alongside!
There are still nine bags
of farmyard manure to
add to the soil for
conditioning but we hope
to get this operational
early next week. It
already seems to be a
great environment for
growing, the chillies are
easily twice the size of
those left in the
greenhouse.
