HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
21st August 2016
Signs of Autumn already in the garden, silver birch
shedding its leaves and other trees looking ominously
yellow in patches. We have visited RHS Rosemoor this
week and looked carefully at the infrastructure for
some inspiration. Their use of yew hedges has given us
the idea of planting one in front of the decaying fence
next to the field where we usually sit in the evening.
Work has started on pulling out more old stumps that
are lined alongside the fence before we can prepare
the soil for the new yew plants, estimated to total
about 50 planted in a two-row stagger.
The plum tree has
produced a lot more
fruit than last year
when it managed just
three plums. We like to
think cleaning up the
branches and digging a
circle around the trunk
so it could be fed
nutrients has helped.
But…
… there seems little
hope for it. The damage
to the trunk, which
looks to be years old,
has got worse and there
is almost a hole right
through it now. It
probably fills with water
and just quietly rots
away. Sad to lose it but
it will have to come
down and be replaced
before it blows down.
