HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
30th August 2016
Some kind of rot or mould has appeared in the
polytunnel and wiped out several tomato plants. Also
there is an attack of red spider mite on some of the
other plants which we’ve had to spray. Very sad to have
to burn the tomato plants especially those with fruit on
them. Outside, leaves are falling all over the place
now, at the moment the mower picks them up along
with the grass. The space for the yew hedge at the top
has been cleared of the six stumps and the annoying
sheets of black plastic ground cover, just need to
prepare the soil and remove the weeds and brambles.
The new hydrangea,
“Unique” has been
planted in the cornus
kousa bed, which is
being tidied and the
bare earth covered in
bark chippings. We had
to dig out what we
thought were two
azaleas to make room,
but found it was
actually three just far
too close together
The three azaleas have
been transplanted in
the bed in front of the
bedrooms. We had to
heave out some more
old shrubs but, not
unusually for Morwell,
we found something
unexpected. The edge
of the bed in front of
the small window is in
fact a thin layer of
earth over a set of
concrete steps leading
down to the remains of
a path. The small
window was once the
front door. The steps
will have to stay hidden
away!
Also from the front
bed we removed this
self-seeded
cotoneaster, the
parent grows
alongside the garage
and probably helps to
hold that up. The
young tree, or maybe
just a shrub, has
grown with branches
to one side and the
other but none in
between so ideal
against a fence, and
is now at the top of
the garden close to
where the yew hedge
will end.
