HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
5th September 2016
The polytunnel blight problems continue. On a
brighter note our pair of swallows that took over the
garage rafters in May have had their second brood
and another three babies are learning the tricks of
fly catching around the garden and field in the
evenings. Work has progressed on clearing space for
the yew hedge, and we discovered a toad living
under the old fence boards. Unfortunately he/she is
very camera shy!
The last of the tomatoes which were planted quite recently
have collapsed very quickly, and of those planted back in
June, which have plenty of fruit on them, sadly many are
not going to be saveable, if indeed any are. The infected
plants have since been cleared out. Anyone got any idea
what is the cause?
Not all is doom and gloom though,
the courgettes and particularly the
cucumbers are growing very well -
we can’t keep up with the
cucumbers! Pity you can’t freeze
them…
The beans are thriving in the tunnel
if a little squashed together, we did
wonder about pollination of the
flowers for the beans and the
chillies but both are producing
plenty of flowers and now fruit. The
herbs too are very encouraging, the
best coriander we have ever grown.
