HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
13th December 2016
The main task for the past month or so has been
trying to keep up with the leaf fall. Luckily we have
had dry calm weather at times which has helped
make the job a little easier. I think next year this
tedious job will be mechanised! Also the polytunnel
has been cleared of diseased and expired plants and
those still growing tidied up.
The mole seems to have
retreated into the field at
the back. Last week a far
more destructive visitor
came in, looks like a badger
has been rooting in the grass
for worms and grubs. Divots
ripped up all over the place
around the fruit trees. I’ve
blocked off the hole under
the fence which appeared to
be the route in. Lesley has
carefully rebuilt the damage
rather like a jigsaw and we
hope for no repeats.
We’ve moved the second, and
largest, of the trees from the
overcrowded south beds to a
new home closer to the house.
It has a large root system
which we had to cut back and
we have doubts about its
viability. Especially when the
wind blows hard. There is
another small prunus to move
to make a line of three, when
we get some drier weather
again.
Finally, after years of
trying and failing,
we’ve managed to
grow carrots! There is
a row of these growing
well in the polytunnel
middle bed. Tastes as
good as it looks!
