HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
29th March 2017
Some more fine weather and the potato bed is ready,
the spuds are in the potting shed chitting and there
has been progress tidying up the beds at the front of
the garden. Our builder has started work on the
soakaway for the front and as it seems with most
building projects at Morwell, nothing is as
straightforward as we think.
27th March was a
pleasant day and in the
time-honoured tradition
we sat at the top of the
garden with a G&T after
the day’s toil. We were
very pleasantly surprised
to see a swallow
swooping over the
garden and the field,
next day there were two
roosting on the
electricity line next to
the garage. One is a bit
camera shy but seems
likely it is our garage-
nesting pair from last
year back rather early.
The downpipe in the middle needs to be connected to a viable soakaway, that was the main job when
our builder started. Digging away the surrounding crazy paving revealed all kind of horrors certain to be
contributing to the damp problems, like an old soakaway just to the right of the raised bed or the vent
under the floor next to the downpipe being buried under the paving. So the paving has gone, a new door
step put down and the area cleared in preparation for pavers to be laid. What more could go wrong?
Just after this was taken it started to rain. It rained for hours and the carefully laid concrete is not so
pretty and the ground is a sea of red mud. Right now more rain is expected…
