HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
7th July 2017
We visited the Flower Show at Hampton Court on a
very warm day, saw everything and only bought a
few plants for once.
Back home two more of the leylandii have been
felled and the polytunnel is already showing the
benefits of more light at the end of the tunnel.
The pea plants are
outstanding. So far the
area fenced off for the
vegetables has proved
successful in keeping
out unwanted
intruders, apart from
the slugs of course. But
the peas don’t seem to
have suffered in any
way, not even with the
late frost in April, and
promise a bumper
crop.
Felling the leylandii
behind the polytunnel
has given much more
light at the far end
especially in the
morning, and the
plants have responded
noticeably.
The six tomato plants,
each in a pot with a
watering reservoir, are
growing with strong
leaves and plenty of
flowers, unlike those in
the greenhouse which
all look sick with curled
leaves. However the
greenhouse plants have
still generated a lot of
tomatoes.
The cavalo nero is still
going strong on the left
and the onions are now
ready to pull on
demand.
One plant we bought at Hampton Court was a new hydrangea called Love You Kiss, white flowers with a
pink edging. We’ve put it at the end of the avenue and despite all the other hydrangeas in the garden
getting no rabbit attention we’ve put a guard net up, just in case. The transplanted hydrangea the other
side of the prunus serrula is also coming into flower and is also pink.
