HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
9th October 2017
We are planning to expand the vegetable growing
beds outside the polytunnel. The working daylight
hours are much reduced and the weather is quite
unpredictable - as usual at Morwell it defies the
Met Office forecasts. It is noticeably cooler and this
has slowed grass growth, so not so much mowing.
That joy is replaced by weekly leaf round-ups, the
various prunus trees and the magnolias are still
fully clothed though.
The yew sapling hedge we planted last November on the east fence has grown but some parts
better than others. It is quite noticeable now that the plants to the south look far less healthy than
those at the nearer northern end, quite why is a mystery. Some of the far trees look really green
but a lot have yellow and brown leaves. We are hopeful they’ll rally and be fine, taxus (yew) is
supposedly really hard to kill off!
Both veg beds have
been widened and
the grass between
them is being
removed so that
we can put solid
pavers as a path
between them. The
enclosed patch of
grass proved to be
time-consuming to
keep down while
we need the
enclosure to keep
the rabbits out.
