HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
26th March 2018
Still cold and there has even been a light dusting of
snow recently. A spell of cold and dry weather has
seen further progress with the planned five
vegetable beds, and also the wildflower patch has
been cleared and seeded.
By this time last year we had got well into grass
cutting. Not much signs of growth this year yet, nor
the swallows who returned to the garage late last
March.
The wildflower patch has been mowed, then raked and scarified with the strimmer, a long process. The
seeds are being scattered in the picture. We hope this will be a better result than last year, and also that
some of last year’s yellow rattle will still be viable to keep the grass down. Another change is the
branches of ash and oak that were overhanging the patch have gone so there should be more light.
Bed four has been easier to prepare as most of it was the bed that housed the overcrowded hydrangeas.
Instead of stones old roots are the bugbear when digging and rotavating. So far bed one has the 150 garlic
plants still going well, bed two is being prepared for the onions, bed three will be home for the potatoes
which are currently chitting, and bed four is now ready for the beans and peas whenever we decide to
sow them. Still talk of frost and more snow in the weather forecast so not just yet.
