HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
15th April 2018
The swallows have just returned much later than
in 2017. They are having to share the garage with
the robins too. Outside the garden is coming to
life as the very cold weather has been replaced
by warmer days and longer daylight.
We have started to take down the rambling
yellow cypress near the fruit trees to allow us to
plant shrubs ready for the day we build the
garden pagoda in front of the Joseph Rock sorbus.
The fifth and last vegetable
bed has been dug out and
boards put around it. It was
very stony indeed,
suspicious though that
buried amongst the stones
was half a brick.
The turf cut out when
digging the beds has been
reclaimed to fill in the
space from bed to
transplanted hydrangeas. It
may need a little help from
some grass seed.
Now we need to fence the
whole area to protect it!
The polytunnel has been cleared and enriched
soil barrowed in to top dress all the beds. Some
rocket is still growing as well as the herbs near
the door.
After the beds and their nutrients were well
watered in the opportunity was taken while the
water butts were empty to double the water
capacity on both sides, and provide the butts
with better support in the shape of 60 x 60cm
flags laid on a bed of level sand.
Finally Lesley has planted seeds which we hope
will soon populate the polytunnel beds and feed
us later in the year!
