HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
24th April 2018
Warm and dry conditions have given us a
chance to catch up with garden jobs, and a
start has been made on TLC for all the wooden
garden furniture.
The final vegetable bed has had a lot of topsoil
added to it and is ready for planting. The
rather poorly-looking yews on the east
boundary are reviving and have been fully
mulched with bark chippings.
The yellow cypress was cleared
without damage to any surrounding
shrubs or trees, or ourselves. The
branches have been laid out along the
north Devon bank as a deterrent to
animals sneaking in despite the barbed
wire. The stump was cut down and it
gave me the impetus to finish cutting
the pond tree stump down to a
reasonable size and shape.
The plan was for the
laurel we planted in
November 2015 to grow
and act as a barrier to
deer jumping the bank.
We’ve had the hazel
trees cut down to let in
more light, but after
the many cold nights
and days the laurel has
suffered badly. It will
regenerate but it isn’t
going to be an effective
barrier for some time
yet sadly. And the deer
are still coming in.
