HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
12th June 2018
Another landmark reached this week, and the next
big project is already upon us.
The weather has been very dry for over a month
now, some of the grass is beginning to yellow and
we have to water the vegetable beds and any new
plantings every other day.
The wildflower patch has some promising signs at
last although the knapweed has taken over the
middle bed. The runner beans are sprinting up the
experimental bean cage, but some plants in the
polytunnel are still a bit slow to get going.
The final run of wire to protect the vegetable growing area has been put up, and now when the gates are
closed the rabbits shouldn’t be able to get in. Work has already started to dismantle the fencing we put up
around the beds themselves, it was a real trial to keep stepping over the netting to weed and water.
The original idea for this defence was a brick wall about four feet high! That changed when we’d removed
all the leylandii along the south fence and discovered we do have a bit of a view over the countryside
towards Bere Alston. The fence is just about three feet high and should discourage deer if we are unlucky
enough to be plagued by them again, and we still have the view.
The garden pagoda has
been brought forward
after seeing a good offer
on price at soon to be
closed Tesco Direct. The
space has been cut out
and levelled but we need
the kit of parts to
ascertain where the
supporting concrete flags
are needed for the floor
joists.
The dry weather helps
immensely with the back-
breaking job of stripping
the grass from the
surface, wish we had more
of it!
