HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
2nd July 2018
June was a very warm and dry month. Between 7
and 8am on 1st July we had more rain than in the
whole of June. The weather has stopped the grass
growing so no mowing for some time now.
Cucumbers, tomatoes, courgettes and cavalo nero
are once again growing in the polytunnel. The
wildflower patch looks much better in places with
some new flowers coming into bloom.
The garden pagoda has arrived and been built, also
the leptospermums marking the edge of the fruit
trees have been planted to form a low hedge.
The finished pagoda, although we are going to put in a step at the front and a small rockery either side of
the entrance. The “instructions” for building the pagoda were a bit basic and there was some delay in
getting (conflicting) answers to questions from the manufacturers. But it is going to be a favourite spot
especially when it cuts out the cold east wind. Foreground sees part of the lepto hedge and one of the
pear trees, which haven’t blossomed this year so no fruit to look forward to.
The result of the garlic crop - a magnificent 130 bulbs hanging up to dry.
There were 20 more which are too small to plait and are already being used
in the kitchen. The onions in the second vegetable bed are also going to be
ready very soon and are the biggest we’ve ever grown. It’s not a problem
hanging garlic in the garage - the car lives outside in summer while the
swallows and their broods take over inside.
