HIGHER MORWELL GUNPOWDER STORE PROJECT
A building is shown on
the Ordnance Survey
map dated 1881 at this
point and was identified
in our surveyor’s report
on the property as
starting life as a
gunpowder store for the
adjacent East Wheal
Russell mine. It is very
damp inside, the
corrugated iron roof has
been penetrated by
creepers although it
doesn’t actually leak
water. Also the ground
level outside is above
floor level inside. It has
been used as a shop.
We haven’t come to a
decision on what to do
with this building, and it
will take some
investment to replace the
roof and possibly ‘tank’
the inside to make it dry.
One possible idea we
have had would be to
make the window end an
entrance and use the
room to store power tools
we use in the garden,
which are rapidly taking
over the space in the
garage.
Another idea is to make
this a larger workshop
than the current wooden
shed. We may come up
with a third alternative,
but realistically any idea
would need a fully dry
interior and provision of
electricity.
