HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
15th June 2017
More woodcutting, the other tree that occupies the
pond space is being taken down slowly and giving us
more mulch for use on the yew hedges.
The potatoes are going so well - we keep a close eye
out for signs of the dreaded blight, also on the
tomatoes which are now much better in the
polytunnel than in the greenhouse.
Taking down the Lawson’s
Cypress and reclaiming the
dropped foliage has
uncovered a couple of
residents. Two toads, one big
one small, had made the
damp dark space under the
tree their home. Sorry…
The logs from this tree are
quite promising for use in the
wood burner, not full of sticky
resin like the leylandii.
A new pallet has been added
to the garage store to dry
more of the wood for 2018.
Last year a peony bud appeared near the polytunnel, and
just rotted away without blooming.
This year it has been spectacular and is already marked for
a transplant elsewhere as this area will be turned over to
more vegetable growing beds next year.
The vegetable plots are
still keeping the rabbits
out, and some things
are growing very well.
The peas and potatoes
are putting the runner
beans to shame, and
the broad beans at the
far end of the right
hand bed are looking
very hopeful. For those
of us who love broad
beans.
