HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
1st April 2018
Exactly one year ago the magnolias, camellias and early prunus trees were in flower, and there were green leaves everywhere. This year we are still waiting for any leaves to appear. However the potatoes are now planted and the polytunnel has been cleared ready for some fresh soil nutrients before planting begins.
No sign yet of the swallows, and we wonder what they will think of having near neighbours as a pair of robins have built a nest on top of a box in the garage. They seem happy enough with the car moving in and out but the recycling bins are directly below, and putting out the bottles usually results in a loudly tutting robin whizzing past my ear.
The hellebores have stood up to the persistent cold weather well, and are still flowering along with the rather late daffodils and primroses. The cyclamens under the copper beech seem to have lost out to frost as there is no sign of them now. Worryingly the laurel planted in 2015 alongside the Devon bank along the road are looking very sickly too. We hope for a late Spring revival!
