HIGHER MORWELL GARDEN DIARY
17th August 2018
After the warm weather the rains. All a recipe
for the grass to start growing again, indeed
everything looks refreshed and the brambles
inevitably are invading. Inside the polytunnel
this year’s cavolo nero has been stripped bare by
cabbage white caterpillars. We hope the cavolo
nero will recover and start again but we know
now not to leave the door open even when it is
very warm.
The grandchildren spent some time with us at the beginning of
August and were very helpful digging up the vegetables that
were ready. Alfie was in charge of the Charlotte potatoes and
Lula pulled up the first batch of white onions. The Charlottes
make wonderful chips! Not so much slug damage this year, could
be the weather or the nematodes we watered into the ground in
July.
The wildflowers are just about done, there is one new musk mallow but
the rest is dying off. We will strim the patch this year sometime in
September, weather permitting, then rake it to remove as much as we can
before reseeding with selected plants before the end of the year. No more
common knapweed, we have more than enough!
